
Orange & Black Nanaimo Bars
Nanaimo bars are a Canadian classic that blends a chewy, chocolatey, nutty base with creamy layers. We’ve added a twist to the classic by giving the filling an orange tang. The result is an orange and black dessert and snack bar that will quickly become a favorite. A luscious treat anytime, it’s the perfect addition to a Halloween party.
Ingredients
Base:
- 1/3 cup Sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa
- 2 Eggs beaten
- 2 1/4 cups graham cracker crumbs
- 3/4 cup unsweetened coconut fine or medium
- 1/2 cup walnuts finely chopped
- 1 orange zest only
Orange Filling:
- 3/4 cup Butter
- 1 tablespoon frozen orange juice concentrate
- 1 orange zest & juice
- 3 cups icing sugar
- 1/4 cup custard powder
- 1 tablespoon Milk
Topping:
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate
- 2 tablespoons Butter unsalted
Notes
Note 1: The orange zest for the base can be fairly coarse, but be sure that the zest for the orange filling is finely grated.
Note 2: You can substitute your favorite orange liqueur for the orange juice concentrate.
